it's feeding time!

Once we’re ready to feed the little monsters...

BARF feeding time!We take two containers of food out of the freezer. One goes in the refrigerator to defrost slowly, intended for use in a couple of days.  Then, we run a pot of water through the coffee maker and pour it into a baking pan and set the other container in the hot water, turning and splitting up the contents until it is thawed but still cold.

Then, we pour the thawed food into a larger “serving” container, and add the following ingredients and stir gently until thoroughly combined.

  • The content of one Dry Mix container
  • 6 Teaspoons of Oil (Flax Seed, Olive, Almond, Vegetable, or a combination)
  • 1 Teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 Teaspoon of Organic Honey

We then place their “feeding” bowls (ceramic or glass) into the pan of hot water for about five minutes, to warm the food to room temperature, and serve.

Twice during the week, we add to the serving container...

  • Two RAW organic/free range chicken egg yolks
  • Two COOKED organic/free range chicken egg whites (cooking the whites eliminates the interference of the absorption of biotin in the yolk that a raw white can cause).

Once a week, we add to one dinner for each cat:

  • One Vitamin A (10,000 IU) and Vitamin D (400 IU) capsule
  • Two Vitamin E (400 IU) capsules. Use only pure, natural Vitamin E, indicated on the bottle by “d-Alpha Tocopheryl.”  Cats are less able to absorb synthetic Vitamin E, indicated by “dl-Alpha Tocopheryl” or mixed tocopheryls.

Lupi gnaws on a chicken thighNow that both Mickey and Lupi have grown accustomed to the variety of their fresh food diet, we’ve been adding further variety by occasionally feeding a can of Wysong Natural Meat Pet Food (from our local health food store) in the turkey, venison or rabbit varieties.  These meats contain no additives, and are cooked only as much as necessary to allow preservation by canning.  We prepare these for feeding the same way we would a container of the fresh, frozen food, adding two vegetable or fruit cubes, one grain cube, one container of dry mix and the oil.

It is our ultimate goal to eliminate the need to provide vitamin supplementation other than the “extras” recommended by Mickey and Lupi’s veterinarian, with hope that their nutritional needs can eventually be served by using foods that contain the necessary nutrients.   We learned from Trina at Pets4Life that variety is the key in providing a balanced diet with minimal supplementation.

The Great Sushi IncidentFor now, however, the process we use is a “comfortable” one that new BARF feeders so desperately desire. Allowing Mickey and Lupi to experiment with new taste sensations in the meantime will help accustom them to new tastes and make a further transition to natural vitamin and mineral sources an easier one...

Here, Mickey, who prefers the familiar, watches on in horor as Lupi steals a piece of Sushi!
